Character Sketches (2019)

The Bible is full of lives worth a closer look. In this round of Character Sketches we study Samson's squandered strength, Ruth's loyal love in a desperate season, David's giant-sized confidence in his God, and Herodias—a sobering picture of the influence parents carry. Every life tells a story, and every story teaches us something about God.

Ruth

To be a childless widow was to be among the lowest, most disadvantaged classes in the ancient world. There was no one to support you, and you had to live on the generosity of strangers. Naomi had no family in Moab, and no one else to help her. She was in a desperate, desperate situation. Ruth 1:16-17 16 Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. 17 Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!” 01 Ruth was determined.

Herodias

Our lives should influence our kids to ask for _________________. You are a key co-author in the book of your child’s life. What The Bible says about The Kingdom of God: Pray for it. Seek it. It’s coming. It’s not yet here. It already is. It’s present in your midst. It’s upon you. It’s at hand. What is God’s Kingdom? _________________. Where is God’s Kingdom? _________________. Can we experience God’s Kingdom on earth? _________________. Romans 14:17 For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Why should I ask for God’s Kingdom? -We want him to rule and reign in our lives.

David

  1. David knew who he was. 1 Samuel 17:10 (NLT) I defy the armies of Israel today! Send me a man who will fight me!" 9 If he kills me, then we will be your slaves. But if I kill him, you will be our slaves! 1 Samuel 17:26 (NKJV) Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, "What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who [is] this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" Romans 2:29 (NLT) No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by God's Spirit.

Samson

Hebrews 11:32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us Judges 13:2 A certain man of Zorah, named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, had a wife who was childless, unable to give birth. 3 The angel of the Lord appeared to her and said, “You are barren and childless, but you are going to become pregnant and give birth to a son. 4 Now see to it that you drink no wine or other fermented drink and that you do not eat anything unclean.
