Providence: The God Who Sees To It

Have you ever felt like God was absent in the pain, invisible in the ordinary, or silent in the waiting? Through the story of Ruth, we discover that God's providence isn't just present in those moments—it's actively working. From devastating loss to faithful obedience to patient waiting, Ruth's journey reveals a God who sees every detail and faithfully governs it all toward redemption, ultimately pointing us to our true refuge in Christ.

Providence - God's hand faithfully governing every detail of life to accomplish his perfect plan for his glory.

Exodus 3:7

"I have surely seen the oppression of My people… I have heard their cry… and I have come down to deliver them."

Westminster Confession of Faith God's Providence - upholds, directs, disposes, and governs all creatures, actions, and things, from the greatest even to the least, by His most wise and holy providence.

Romans 11:36

"For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen."

Colossians 1:16–17 (NKJV)

"For by Him all things were created… All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist."

Ruth 1:1–2

In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. So a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab. The man's name was Elimelek, his wife's name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there.

1. God's providence is present in the pain.

Ruth 1:3–5

Now Elimelek, Naomi's husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years, both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.

Ruth 1:20–21

"Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me." … "I went away full, and the Lord has brought me home empty."

Romans 8:28 (NKJV)

"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose."

Ruth 2:2–3

"Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor." Naomi said to her, "Go ahead, my daughter." So she went out, entered a field and began to glean behind the harvesters.

Ruth 2:2–3

As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelek.

2. God's Providence is in the Ordinary

Ruth wasn't wandering into coincidence; she was walking in God's providence.

Obedience has never required understanding.

Ruth 3:1

"…My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for."

Ruth 3:3

Naomi says to Ruth, "Wash, put on perfume, and get dressed in your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don't let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking."

Ruth 3:12–13

"Now it is true that I am a close relative; however, there is a relative closer than I. Stay this night, and in the morning it shall be that if he will perform the duty of a close relative for you—good; let him do it. But if he does not want to perform the duty for you, then I will perform the duty for you, as the Lord lives."

Ruth 3:18

She tells Ruth, "Sit still, my daughter, until you know how the matter will turn out; for the man will not rest until he has concluded the matter this day."

3. God's Providence is in the Waiting

The waiting exposes where we think our security is.

  • Abraham waited years to have his son Isaac.
  • Joseph waited through slavery and prison before seeing God's promise fulfilled.
  • David was anointed king but waited years before wearing the crown.
  • Even Jesus lived in seasons of waiting. Thirty years of ordinary life before beginning His public ministry. Three days in the tomb before the resurrection.

John 11:5–6

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when He heard that he was sick, He stayed two more days…

4. God's providence Leads to True Refuge

Ruth 4:9–10

"You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech's… Moreover, Ruth the Moabite… I have acquired as my wife"

Luke 13:34

"How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings."

John 6:35

"I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst."
