Into the Name
Matthew 28:18–20
“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’”
Matthew 3:11
“I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
Matthew 3:13–17
“Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’ But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.’ Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.’”
Jesus transforms baptism from an act of repentance into an entrance into divine covenant union.
Baptizō - submerge, overwhelm, to immerse
Romans 6:3–4
“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”
What we are immersed in transforms what we become: we are baptized into Christ to become like Him.
We have missed the call to make disciples if those we are making are content in the shallow end and indistinguishable from the world.
Into the Name
To be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit means there is a transfer of ownership from sin to Christ.
The baptized person enters the official ownership, covenant protection, and jurisdiction of the name of the Lord.
There is one name for our Triune God — one substance:
- The Father is Yahweh.
- The Son is Yahweh.
- The Holy Spirit is Yahweh.
- Jesus (Yeshua) = Yahweh saves.
1 Corinthians 10:1–2
“For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.”
Whatever you stay immersed in long enough will eventually leave its name on you. So make sure you’re being baptized into the right name.
Galatians 3:27
“For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”
Believers are immersed in the divine Son Himself and receive internal regeneration.
What “Into the Name” Grants
1. Unshakable Belonging
You are legally and spiritually transferred from the domain of darkness into the kingdom of His beloved Son.
Colossians 1:13
2. New Covenant Identity
“You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people.”
1 Peter 2:9
3. Full Adoption as Sons
No longer spiritual orphans or slaves to fear; you bear the royal family name.
1 John 3:1; Galatians 3:26–28
Baptism into Jesus breaks the legal right of sin and death to rule over your life.
Because you bear His name, the Holy Spirit empowers you to “do the next thing”: obeying Christ’s commands and walking in supernatural fruitfulness.
What Are We Called To — and What Kind of Disciple Are We Called to Produce?
1. Live From Identity, Not For It
Start each day recognizing you are Christ’s purchased possession. You live from His acceptance, not to earn it.
2. Surrender Ownership Daily
Our lives and all that we are should be at His beck and call.
3. Walk in Resurrection Authority
When tempted by old habits, declare your death to sin and rely on the Holy Spirit.
4. Fulfill the Great Commission
This is what the call is: to baptize disciples — to align their lives under the authority and saving name of Jesus.
