Hearing God | Pastor Rich Butler

What if the God of the universe still speaks—and not just generally, but specifically… to you?

In this powerful kickoff to our new series “Hearing God,” Pastor Rich Butler unpacks one of the most foundational and transformational truths in the Christian life: God still speaks, you can hear Him, and His voice will always sound like what He wrote.

Hebrews 1:1-2 (NLT)

Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.

John 10:2-5 & 27 (NLT)

But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.  The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.”

Colossians 3:16 (NKJV)

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Luke 5:4-6 (NLT)

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear!

1 Timothy 1:18 (NLT)

Timothy, my son, here are my instructions for you, based on the prophetic words spoken about you earlier. May they help you fight well in the Lord’s battles.

2 Corinthians 13:14 (NLT)

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Romans 14:17 (NIV)

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit

Colossians 3:15 (NLT)

And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.

  1. “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27).

    • What does it practically look like in your life to “hear” God’s voice? How do you usually sense Him speaking through Scripture, peace, wise counsel, or something else?

  2. The message highlighted that God still speaks today through His Word, His Spirit, and His peace.

    • Which of these three have you experienced most recently? How did you recognize that it was truly God guiding you?

  3. Like the disciples in Luke 5:4-6, hearing God’s voice often requires both trust and obedience.

    • Can you share a time when you stepped out in obedience, even when it didn’t fully make sense, and saw God’s faithfulness on the other side?

  4. We live surrounded by “competing voices.”

    • What are some voices (internal or external) that make it hard to hear God clearly? What helps you tune your heart back to His leading?
