Big Idea:

Even when God's people grumble and rebel, God shows mercy. Jesus is the greater Deliverer who takes the place of rebels like us.

Read Together

Numbers 21:5– "And the people spoke against God and against Moses…"

John 3:14–15– "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life."

The Story

God rescued Israel from Egypt, but in the wilderness they complained a lot. "We're tired of this food! We're thirsty! Why did you bring us out here to die?"

Their grumbling showed they didn't trust God. So God sent fiery serpents, and the people were bitten. Then they cried out to Moses: "Pray for us!"

God told Moses to make a bronze serpent and put it on a pole. Whoever looked at the bronze serpent would live.

God's mercy saved His people—even when they didn't deserve it.

Advent Connection

Jesus said that just like the serpent was lifted up, so He would be lifted up on the cross.

• The people looked and lived. • We believe and live. • The bronze serpent brought temporary healing. • Jesus brings eternal healing.

At Christmas, we celebrate that the greater Deliverer came to save grumblers and rebels like us.

Talk About It

• Why do you think the Israelites grumbled? • What did God provide to save them? • How does Jesus save us in an even greater way?

Activity

Follow the Leader

Play a quick game of "Follow the Leader." Take turns being the leader—everyone else has to copy their movements. After a few rounds, talk about how God gave Moses as Israel's leader, but many people didn't want to follow him. Remind your kids that God has given us Jesus as our forever Leader, and we can always trust Him.

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for showing mercy to Your people even when they complained. Thank You for Jesus, who takes our place and gives us life. Help us trust Him. Amen.

Family Challenge

At dinner or bedtime, go around and share one way you can pray for or encourage a leader in your life this week (a pastor, teacher, coach, or parent). Then pray for them together as a family.
