Big Idea:
God provided a substitute for Isaac, pointing to the greater substitute—Jesus, who gave His life for us.
Read Together
Genesis 22:8 – "Abraham said, 'God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.'"
Romans 8:32– "He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?"
The Story
After many years, God kept His promise and gave Abraham and Sarah a son—Isaac. His name means "laughter," because his birth brought so much joy.
But one day, God tested Abraham. He told him to take Isaac to a mountain and offer him as a sacrifice. Abraham trusted God, even though it seemed impossible.
At the last moment, God stopped Abraham and provided a ram caught in the thicket. Isaac's life was spared because God gave a substitute.
Advent Connection
Isaac's story points us forward to Jesus. Jesus is the true Son who was not spared. On the cross, God provided Him as our substitute so that we could live.
At Christmas we remember that God gave us everything by giving us His Son.
Talk About It
• How do you think Abraham felt when God asked him to sacrifice Isaac? • What does it mean that God "provided"? • How does Jesus become our substitute?
