With Others

What if prayer was never meant to be a solo activity, but a shared space where heaven responds to agreement on earth? What if praying with others isn’t just encouraging—but actually releases authority, strengthens faith, and invites Jesus to actively participate in the moment? In this message, we explore why Jesus prayed with others, how agreement begins with alignment to God’s will, and how corporate prayer creates an atmosphere where God’s kingdom moves with power. What would change if you stopped seeing prayer as private words and started seeing it as a heavenly sound—voices blended together under God’s Word and led by the Holy Spirit?

Jesus prayed with others.

Luke 9:28

Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray.

Jesus didn't treat prayer like just a private, hidden discipline. He opened it up, and He invited others into it.

Matthew 18:18–20

Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them."

1. Agreement Begins With Alignment

Matthew 18:19

If two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.

Jesus has been talking about praying and living in keeping with God's Lordship.

Matthew 18:18

Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

To loose something means: What heaven says is true, right, and good; I'm praying that it gets released on earth.

To bind something means: What heaven rejects, resists, and forbids; I'm praying that it gets restricted on earth.

Matthew 18:19

If two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.

"Anything" means "anything" according to God's will!

John 14:13

Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do.

"in my name" = According to His character, His will, & His authority.

1 John 5:14–15

If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of Him.

"according to His will" = in agreement with His word.

Every promise of God has a boundary, and that boundary is the will of God Himself. When our Lord says, "Ask what you will," He does not invite us to ask amiss. He invites us to ask aright. Prayer is not the art of bending heaven to our desires. It is the holy discipline of bending our desires into harmony with heaven. — Charles Spurgeon

2. Agreement Releases Power

When alignment with God's will meets agreement among God's people, power is released.

Matthew 18:19–20

Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 18 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.

The phrase "among them" does not mean He shows up and He's just spectating; it means He's participating.

When we pray together, we are not just saying words; we are creating an atmosphere, where Jesus and the kingdom of God are welcomed, recognized, and activated.

That atmosphere is built on three things: 1. Authority 2. Faith 3. Humility.

1. Authority

Genesis 1:28–30

God blessed them; and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth." 29Then God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; 30 and to every animal of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to everything that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food"; and it was so.

Luke 4:5–6

Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, "All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.

Matthew 28:18

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Matthew 28:18–19

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go...

One of the primary means God has given us to exercise kingdom authority, is prayer.

The prayer of agreement with others does not just create connection, it creates an atmosphere of authorization. And where there is authorization, there is intervention.

2. Faith

Mark 6:5–6

And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6And he marveled because of their unbelief.

Romans 10:17

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.

There is a kind of faith that cannot be formed by information alone. It is formed by imitation. When you hear another believer pray with confidence in God's promises, your own faith is strengthened without you realizing it. You do not merely hear words. You hear trust. You hear surrender. You hear hope. And faith rises in response. Corporate prayer does not only express belief. It produces it. The Spirit uses the faith of one to awaken faith in another. Faith is not only taught from Scripture. It is caught through prayer. — Tim Keller

3. Humility

In the kingdom of God, being needy is not a turn off.

Matthew 5:3

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

1 Peter 5:5

God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

2 Corinthians 12:10

I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. When I am weak, then I am strong.

God showcases his power on the stage of human weakness.

When we pray together in agreement, we're not just stacking voices; we're shifting the atmosphere, and in that atmosphere, Jesus steps in and gets active.

3. Agreement Creates a Heavenly Sound

Matthew 18:19

Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.

symphōneō - sounds fitting together, sounds that are blending.

symphonéō is where we get the word symphony.

If two of you learn how to sound together, if two of you learn how to blend your voices, then heaven responds.

We have the ability, through prayer, to create a heavenly sound that doesn't just move people on earth but that moves heaven.

For a symphony to blend in agreement, they need two things:
#1. A Piece
#2. A Person

Our Piece, from the Master composer, is God's Word. And our Person, we come under the leadership of the Person of the Holy Spirit.

  1. Jesus invited others into prayer, showing that agreement and shared faith matter in the life of a believer.
How does praying with others feel different than praying alone, and what holds you back from engaging more fully in corporate prayer?

  2. The message taught that agreement in prayer is not about getting God to agree with us, but about aligning ourselves with God’s will.
What does it look like to align your prayers with God’s Word and character rather than personal preference?

  3. When alignment with God’s will meets agreement among God’s people, Jesus promises to be actively present.
Have you ever experienced increased faith, courage, or breakthrough through praying with others? What changed in you during that time?

  4. Corporate prayer was described as a “symphony,” where voices blend together under the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
What might it look like for you to contribute your voice more confidently in prayer with others this season?
