The God Who Satisfies

Why did God rain bread from heaven in the wilderness—and what does it have to do with Jesus? In Exodus 16, God rains bread from heaven to feed His people in the wilderness—but the manna was never just about bread. It was teaching Israel to trust Him one day at a time. In John 6, Jesus reveals that He is the true Bread from Heaven, the One who satisfies our deepest hunger.

Exodus 16:2

And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, and the people of Israel said to them, "Would that we had died by the hand of the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger."

Maclaren Let him that is without similar sin cast the first stone at these grumbling Israelites.

Exodus 16:4

Then the Lord said to Moses, "Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.

Test: Do you trust me enough to obey?

Instructions:

  • Gather only enough for today

  • Do not store it overnight

  • Gather it early each morning

  • Gather double on the sixth day and rest on the Sabbath

Tests:

  1. Trust God for today (Gather only enough for today)

  2. Trust God with tomorrow (Do not store it overnight)

  3. Trust God enough to participate (Gather it early each morning)

  4. Trust God enough to obey and rest (Gather double on the sixth day and keep the Sabbath)

40 years × 365 days ≈ 14,600 days 14,600 small daily decisions to trust God.

John 6:5–6

Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?" He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.

John 6:27–28

Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal." Then they said to him, "What must we do, to be doing the works of God?"

John 6:29

Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent."

John 6:32–33

Jesus then said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

John 6:35

Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

John 6:51

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."

But what does it mean to eat this bread?

Augustine Crede et manducasti — "Believe, and you have eaten."

Eating is believing. Eating is trusting.

Believe means trusting Christ personally, relying on Him for life, placing all confidence in His saving work.

  1. Eat the Bread of Life by Coming to Jesus

  2. Eat the Bread of Life by Trusting His Word

  3. Eat the Bread of Life by Depending on Him Daily

  4. Eat the Bread of Life by Receiving His Grace

Sermon Series - Exodus to Easter || The God Who Satisfies || Exodus 16:4 “Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.”

  1. Where do you see yourself in the story?

In Exodus 16 the Israelites begin grumbling only one month after the Red Sea.
Why do you think people so quickly forget God’s past faithfulness?
Can you think of a time when hunger, stress, or fear made it harder for you to trust God?

  2. Which “trust test” do you find most challenging?

God tested Israel through the instructions about the manna:

    • Trust God for today

    • Trust God with tomorrow

    • Trust God enough to participate

    • Trust God enough to rest

Which of these is hardest for you right now? Why?

  3. What does it mean to “eat the bread of life”?

Jesus says in John 6 that He is the bread of life. Augustine summarized it this way:
    “Believe—and you have eaten.”

What do you think it practically looks like to “feed on Christ” in daily life?

  4. Are you living with daily dependence on Christ?

The Israelites had to gather manna every morning for 40 years.
How can we cultivate the same rhythm of daily dependence on Jesus in our lives?
