The God Who Calls

Join us as we begin a new series, Exodus to Easter.
In Exodus 3, we meet the God who calls- not first to give us a task, but to give us Himself. Before God sends us out, He calls us in- to know the great I AM who hears, remembers, sees, knows, and comes down to save.

Psalm 72:16

There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.

Exodus 2:23–25

During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the people of Israel—and God knew.

Covenant Verbs:

  1. God Heard

  2. God Remembered His Covenant

  3. God Saw

  4. God Knew

Exodus 3:1–6

Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. Moses said, "I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned." When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am." Then he said, "Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground." And he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

God calls to Moses because He wants to reveal Himself to Moses.

The call is not first — Go do something for Me.

The call is — Come and see who I am.

God accepts Moses' self-estimate and sense of inadequacy and counters with "But I will be with you."

Exodus 3:13–14

Then Moses said to God, "If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' what shall I say to them?" God said to Moses, "I am who I am."

To know someone's name in the Bible is to know their character.

I AM WHO I AM

  1. The Ever-Present God

  2. The Sovereign God

  3. The Inexhaustible God

John 8:58

"Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."
