It's Possible to Be Brought Into Something and Not Live Into It Fully
It's possible to be brought into something and not live into it fully.
Ephesians 1:17–18
"...that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints..."
Paul is praying you get a revelation by the Spirit of what you already have.
Romans 8:29
"He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son…"
God wants to take you from where you are to where He sees you, and He sees you in Christ.
To get you there, He gives you Himself. The Holy Spirit.
John 14:16–26
"And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."
Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, "Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?"
Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me. These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you."
#1 The Holy Spirit Is God
When the Spirit comes:
- You don't get a piece of God.
- You don't get a lesser version of God.
- You don't get some spiritual upgrade package.
- You get God.
Everything Jesus did for you, the Holy Spirit makes real in you.
Christianity is not about trying really hard to climb your way up to God; Christianity is God coming to you.
#2 The Holy Spirit Is A Person
The Holy Spirit is not a force. He's not an energy. He's not a vibe. He's a person.
If you don't see Him as a person, you will never develop a relationship with Him.
#3 The Holy Spirit Is Our Helper
John 14:16
"And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper..."
"Another" — allos — one of the very same kind; same character; same everything; nearly a duplicate.
Jesus is saying, "I'm sending you someone just like Me."
John 14:26
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you."
John 15:26–27
"But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning."
John 16:7
"Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you."
John 16:12–13
"I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come."
"Helper" — paráklētos
- Para — means alongside
- Klētos — means to walk
The question is: "Am I walking with Him?"
How does the Holy Spirit help us live into the love we've been brought into? 3 ways:
1. He Reminds You of What's Already True
John 14:26
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit… He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you."
The Holy Spirit anchors you in what's already been done.
John 16:13
"When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth… and He will speak…"
He reminds you of what Jesus has already said. He reminds you of the Word.
John 17:17
"Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth."
"Remembrance" means to cause to remember, to recall to mind.
The Holy Spirit retrieves truth, but He can't retrieve what's never been deposited. He can't remind you of something you've never put in you.
2. He Helps You See Jesus Clearly
2 Corinthians 3:18
"And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit."
You don't fix disordered love by just being told what to do. You fix disordered love by seeing something more beautiful.
What you behold is what you become.
The Holy Spirit opens your eyes to the beauty of Jesus. He keeps turning your attention back to Jesus — back to the cross, back to what Jesus has done, back to the reality of your salvation.
3. He Gives You Power to Respond
Acts 1:8
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
The Holy Spirit helps you live into salvation by reminding you what's true, helping you see Jesus, and giving you power to respond.
You don't have to live the Christian life alone. You were never meant to.
