Hebrews 12:1-2
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
1. We’re In A Race
Hebrews 12:1
… let us run with endurance the race that is set before us
We’re in a unique kind of race. It’s a long-distance, marathon, relay race.
2. Endurance Is The Aim
Hebrews 12:1
let us run with endurance looking unto Jesus… who for the joy that was set before Him endured
Endurance is both the command and the example.
Endurance—hypomonē—constancy, perseverance. Staying power, hang-in there power, or refusing to quit power.
It’s not a fast race, it’s a last race.
If you run this race well your race will have continued impact.
3. Jesus Is The Goal
Hebrews 12:2
looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Jesus ran His race, and in doing so, not only did He endure His race, but what He did endures for our race.
Endurance - To continue in existence; to last.
Endurance isn’t just making it to the end—Endurance is leaving something that goes on after you end.
How do we run this marathon relay race God’s called us to and hand off our faith to the next generation?
1. Run To Pass
The “great cloud of witnesses” didn’t just live for themselves—they laid a path for others to follow.
Jesus did too, He didn’t just run to finish—He ran His race on this earth and He passed something on.
Jesus ran to pass us:
Salvation
Forgiveness
Connection to the Father
If you’re going to pass the baton:
You’ve got to reach out.
Legacy begins with proximity
Ephesians 2:13
Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.
You’ve got to match pace.
Legacy isn’t just about your pace. It’s about your precision. It’s not how fast you ran–legacy is about how well you transfer.
You’ve got to let go.
If you don’t let go, you become the reason they can’t run full speed.
2. Lose What Trips Up & Slows Down
Hebrews 12:1
Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us…
Sin trips us up and Guilt weighs us down
Lay aside - to remove something and push it far out of reach.
It’s not a casual drop—it’s a decisive throw.
1 in 3 teenagers (ages 13–18) will experience an anxiety disorder.
57% of teenage girls and 29% of teenage boys report persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness (CDC, 2023).
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 10–24.
Over 60% of teenagers say the future feels “uncertain and scary.”
Emotional dysregulation and outbursts are on the rise—with anger and irritability being a top reported issue in schools (American Academy of Pediatrics).
The average age of first exposure to porn is now 11 years old.
94% of children will see porn by age 14 (Barna + Covenant Eyes).
74% of teens say they feel pressure to wear a mask online—pretending to be happy or put together on social media—even when they’re struggling in real life.
90% of teens admit they lie to their parents about something on a regular basis.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
That word encourage - to come alongside. A coach running next to a tired athlete
Recognize the Baggage—and the Sin That Trips You Up
Know Who You Are
2 Corinthians 5:17
If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Let the Bags Go—and Don’t Claim Them Later
1 Peter 5:7
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Remember: Your Carrier
Matthew 11:28–30
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest… For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
3. Set Your Pace & Fuel Your Faith.
If you’re going to run with endurance, you need to feast on the Word of God, drink of the presence of God, and breathe deep of the Spirit of God.
We’re running to pass, so we don’t just run hard—we run holy. We run healthy. We run in a way that makes it easier for them to grasp what we’re passing down.
4. Eyes On The Prize
Hebrews 12:2
looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross,
If Jesus is our prize, and His eyes were on the generations to come, then our prize should be the same—generations to come.
Jesus valued young people!
Matthew 19:13
Then little children were brought to Him that He might put His hands on them and pray,
Matthew 18:2
Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, 3 and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.
Matthew 19:13
but the disciples rebuked them.
Matthew 19:14
But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
Hinder - kōlyete - to forbid, prevent, restrain, stand in the way, withhold.
If we have the ability to lead spiritually but choose not to, we’re not just being passive—we’re standing in Jesus’ way.
