The Power of Death Over People
Death has a power over people.
"Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death." — Hebrews 2:14
Two Common Responses to Death
- The Non-Religious/Non-Spiritual — No life after death. Death is the end.
- The Religious/Spiritual (Not Christian) — Death is not the end, but what comes next is uncertain and conditional.
When life, death, or eternity rest on you, you will never be at rest.
Through Death, Jesus Defeated Death
"Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death." — Hebrews 2:14
The power of death is sin, guilt, and condemnation.
"For the wages of sin is death…" — Romans 6:23
Death is not just biological — it is judicial: separation from God, brokenness, and ultimate judgment.
The Devil's Power in Death Is Tied To:
- Our real sin
- Our real guilt
- And God's real justice
What Christ Accomplished at the Cross
"Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death." — Hebrews 2:14
At the Cross:
- Jesus took our sin
- Jesus bore our guilt
- Jesus satisfied the justice of God
"But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone." — Hebrews 2:9
Yes, believers still die. But because Christ has already drained that cup, we do not taste death the way He did.
What Is Your Only Comfort in Life and in Death?
"That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him."
